I proudly sit on the House Select Committee on Involuntary Commitment and Public Safety.
During my freshmen term, I led the NC Democratic caucus’ gun violence prevention strategy with 12 bills to save lives, including safe storage, lost/stolen reporting, red-flag laws, school safety funding, and banning ghost guns, assault rifles, and excessive magazines. None sadly got any bipartisan support or even had a committee hearing, but we forge onward.
Six-in-ten U.S. adults say gun violence is a very big problem in the country today (source). I have been a vocal advocate for gun violence prevention through Moms Demand Action after the horrors of Uvalde, Sandy Hook, Vegas, Parkland (the list of mass shootings horrifically goes on and on). I have personally lost three people I knew to gun violence - one suicide and two homicide. All three were young and vivacious who should all still be with us here today. Gun violence is very triggering to me as it has caused trauma that I will always personally struggle with.
My husband is a gun owner. He grew up with a father in the police force and they have formed an immense bond together over the years hunting and skeet shooting. He is a responsible gun owner and keeps his guns locked in a safe, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. My husband is also a vascular surgeon at Cone. And one of the surgeries he does on a weekly basis is to operate on gun violence victims. Thus he and I both support common-sense gun safety legislation. This is why I believe we aren’t as divided as the NRA wants us to believe.
The NC GOP-led legislature is passing tons of bills to increase penalties for criminals with guns. But we can’t arrest our way out of this situation. We MUST be proactive and simultaneously address this issue from all perspectives.
North Carolina House Democrats hosted a press conference with Moms Demand Action Executive Director Angela Ferrell-Zabala to unveil our 12 gun safety bills ranging from safe storage to red flag laws to banning ghost guns.
SB50: Freedom to Carry NC reduces the age to 18 and removes the permit, background check, and training class in order to carry a loaded concealed weapon in our state. Gov. Stein has vetoed this horrific bill; it was overridden in the Senate but NC House Democrats are united to ensure it doesn't get overridden and become law.
Warning: My speech discusses suicide and homicide.
I hosted a press conference minutes after SB50 passed its initial Senate vote and I was joined by my House and Senate colleagues and local community members to speak out against these dangerous bills! HB5 stalled, but SB50 was passed through both chambers, vetoed by the Gov, and overridden in the Senate. House Dems are staying united to prevent it from becoming law!
HB674: Firearms Liberty Act does 3 things:
1. Allows for a lifetime concealed carry permit
2. Allows domestic violence offenders who have to give up their gun to give it to a licensed firearm dealer vs the sheriff
3. Allows for schools to have “non lethal” items like pepper spray and tasers within locked boxes and those who have access have to do annual training on the weapons.
This bill sadly passed the House but is thankfully stalled in the Senate.
HB 167 Firearm in Unattended Vehicle/Safely Store.
HB 501 Modernize Domestic Violence Protection Order.
HB 571 Funds for PTSD Treatment for Police Officers.
HB 732 Common Sense Gun Regulations.
HB 764 Establish Death by Reckless Boating.
HB 784 Prohibit Assault Weapons.
